Game Park
Wow, what a fabulous day yesterday! My mom, sister and I went to Bandon Game Park--it ended up being about a 3.5 hour drive, but well worth it. The Game Park is a walk-through safari type park and we lucked out in that it's baby season! SO CUTE!!!
Actually there were lots of the big cats, a couple bears, tons of peacocks and pygmy goats/little deer, and other really neat animals. You can see some of them by going to the "animals" section on their site, unfortunately I can't link to the individual pages as there site isn't set up that way. Oooh, the nursery pictures are awesome too!
On the way to Bandon we saw a herd of elk at the Elk Viewing Station before Reedsport...we saw the cows first and decided not to pull over since we see our own every so often, but then the bulls were all laying by the fence a little further down the road. Darnit! Traffic was just fast enough we didn't want to try to do a u-turn and go back, so we didn't get any pictures. They were beautiful though!
The first thing we saw when we stepped into the park were tons of pygmy goats and some deer, and they were announcing that they were going to present the bear cub. Cool!! We saw the big cats several times because they kept announcing the baby presentations and we were right there. lol. They let the bear cub and tiger cubs play together (under supervision, of course!) for a while, then at the end of the day we got to pet the tiger cub and take pictures. The mountain lion cub was so tiny! He was running around all over their presentation pen, but did manage to hold sort of still for photographs. Adorable!!
The cerval cats were hiding out, but we did get to see the lynx, the panthers (both spotted and black ones), a mountain lion pair, a lion pair, a bengal tiger and a white tiger. All beautiful! The male lion was chuffing/roaring off and on the whole time while the female was snoozing. At one point, he'd roar, and then she'd roar back but she was still laying down, so her belly would bellow in and out. Everyone watching decided that they were having a little spat. It was so funny and neat to see though! When telling my grandma about the tigers, she asked if the bengal was Notasha--and she was one of the few who had her name on her sign so we were able to say yes. Turns out that she's the tiger cub that we got to hold and pet many years ago! I'm thinking it was around 15 years ago. Cool! She was being anti-social yesterday, but the white tiger was gorgeous and active. One of the black panthers was "speaking" with a visitor--not quite purring, but more of a speaky-yowl like cats do when you talk with them? It was so cool.
The displays for the elk, antelope, zebras, bison and camels were nice. Part of it allows them to come right up to you if they want, but they can also get away from people if they don't feel social. The elk bull wasn't very cooperative for pictures, but he was gorgeous! Many screaming peacocks in that area..it must be breeding season or something, because they were all very vocal and some were displaying their feathers. They had capybaras! I've seen them on animal planet, and it was awesome to see them in person! And THEN the BABIES came out too! Sweet! The world's largest rodent is rather cute and makes the neatest little purring sound. I believe it was the binterong that was the other unusual animal we got to see...the sign called it a bear cat, relative to the wolverine. The pics on their site are unclear, but I do believe it is the binterong. He was down on the floor below, though, so it was kind of hard to see him.
When we were waiting in line to see the puma cub we got to see lots of the petting/feeding animals. Pygmy goats, little deer and a couple of burros. You should have seen the bellies on some of them! Popped out a foot to the side of their bodies almost. LOL. We wondered if the burros were pregnant, though, because one of the pygmy goats definitely was...you could see her belly poke out and then go rolling down the side as it turned over or something.
The other really awesome thing was the nursery. They had a baby skunk that was red and white! Then they had two young ferrets and two baby foxes. So adorable! After seeing all those babies, we realized we'd missed a section somewhere, so then we found the adult foxes (arctic and silver) and skunks (one red & white, and one white!). They were curled up in their boxes, but you could sort of see them. The snow leopard was also gorgeous! However, the macaws must have been molting, because one was bald and one had very few feathers on the chest. hehe.
*happy sigh* That was our fabulous visit to the Game Park in Bandon! Will definitely have to not wait so long to visit again. It was terrific!
