Word Power answers

Ok, here are the answers to the Word Power poll. Here is the link to the poll in case you wanted to take it prior to looking at the answers!





Prodigious - arousing admiration or respect; extraordinary in size. His district manager praised him for his prodigious effort on the project.

Elucidate - to make clear, explain. The teacher had to stop and elucidate the lengthy directions for her class.

Vortex - whirling mass of air, water, fire; activity or atmosphere that seems to draw everything into it, like a whirlpool. We all were quickly sucked into my friend's vortex of negativity.

Somatic - physical; of the body. He collapsed on the ground in obvious somatic distress.

Resonance - Deep sound; reverberation or amplification. The actor's voice boomed with a dramatic resonance.

Anomaly - Abnormality; deviation from usual. My son's C on his math test was an anomaly I blamed on lack of sleep.

Debility - weakened state. The elderly man suffered from increasing debility and was unable to climb stairs.

Intrinsic - Belonging to the very nature of something. My accountant says that a love of numbers is intrinsic to his chosen profession.

Totemic - Symbolic; representative of a group. The drawing was totemic of the animals native to the wild jungle region.

Obliterate - To completely destroy; remove all traces of what existed. The wildfire obliterated their home and most of the surrounding neighborhood.

Artifice - Clever trick or skill. The filmmaker called on his renowned artifice to build suspense.

Clement - Having compassion; lenient. The troubled teenager was lucky to be standing before a clement judge.

Reconnoiter - To inspect or survey; engage in reconnaissance. The troops took time to carefully reconnoiter the territory before staging their attack. (I had difficulty with this one while knowing in essence what it meant. I mean, you have to explore carefully and then gather back together to discuss your next plan, do you not?! lol.)

Lacunae - Missing parts; gaps. Her debut novel suffered from lacunae in its plot and character development.

Acquiesce - To comply without protest; submit. Rather than engage in another heated argument, her husband acquiesced to the proposed custody changes.

Paroxysm - Sudden emotion or outburst; increase in symptoms leading to convulsion. His daughter remained calm during the funeral, but afterward she gave in to a paroxysm of tears.
