Reviews!
Two more lovely packages of oils arrived in the mail today. YAY!! So much happiness. ^___^
Mata Hari - A renowned exotic dancer and courtesan, possessed of aristocratic elegance, matchless charm, an iron will and a streak of fearlessness. Her scent is striking and bold with a delicate yet dark undertone: five roses with soft jasmine, warmed by vanilla, fig, tonka bean and mahogany, spiced with a drop of coffee bean. Starts out with lovely roses, then turns almost immediately into ALL bitter coffee. First impression is bitter and yucky and so not a keeper, but I'll give it a couple more minutes to see if it warms up into something nicer.
Baobhan Sith - The ghostly White Women of the Scottish highlands. They seduce unwary travelers by night with their unearthly beauty and mesmerizing dancing. They engage their victims in a wild, hypnotic dance, and once they reach exhaustion, exsanguinate their partners with their vampiric kiss. Grapefruit, white tea, apple blossom and ginger. Mmmm, grapefruit! This is a very "biting" scent and just lovely. This may be the longest of the grapefruit scents for me, but it's starting to turn odd at the 20 minute mark. So glad I got to try this one--the first 10 minutes are absolutely fabulous! Completely gone except for that weird and acidic "lack of scent" that remains on all the grapefruit ones I've tried so far. :\
Et Lux Fuit - At last, the light at the end of our three-month tunnel of misfortune. To commemorate this momentous occasion, we present a big ol' bottle of sunny, happy, bounciness -- a golden blend with a celebratory feel, promoting joy, peace, and a sense of comfort and well-being: golden amber, heliotrope, vanilla musk, carnation, daisy and sunflower bouquet, neroli, lemon peel, ylang ylang and honeycomb. Gorgeous!! This is pure sunshine and happiness in a bottle. Mmmmm. What a beautiful scent and mood enhancer. *purrs* Good news--after 30 minutes it's still lovely, but I think that AC's Joy Mojo and Ave Maria Gratia Plena are both acceptable substitutes for being sunshiny and uplifting (without being LE's!). Keeping this imp until it's gone though!
Strangler Fig - A glorious parasite! Once the seeds of the Strangler Fig find root in the bark of a tree, snakelike roots erupt and reach graspingly at the sky. The Strangler Fig then sprouts numerous epiphytic vines that strangles and surrounds its unwilling host, and finally snuffs the life from it. Rooty, woody, with deep green tones. This is a very different scent! Very soft and mesmerizing. After half an hour it's still incredibly lovely. Yay for frimps because you stumble across some really gorgeous/interesting scents that you might not have picked out just on scent description. ^___^ Edit: This is definitely my favorite of today's new arrivals - it is fairly long lasting and absolutely fabulous.
Hungry Ghost Moon - On the 14th day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, the Gates of Hell burst open, and ghosts pour forth from the Nine Darknesses into the sunlit world. To placate the dead, Hell Money is burned, offerings are made, and paper boats and floating lanterns are set out to give comfort and direction to wayward spirits. Though many spirits simply seek out the comforts of their former homes and the company of their loved ones, rancorous spirits also roam the streets, seeking revenge on those who have wronged them, before and after their deaths. Offerings of ginger candy, sugar cane, smoky vanilla and rice wine mingle with a ghost’s perfume of white sandalwood, ho wood, ti, white grapefruit, crystalline musk and aloe. This scent is tapered by the presence of seven herbs, woods and resins used in the purification of the spirit and the purging of earthly concerns from the soul. This starts out a very interesting and varied scent. I really had a hard time picking out any of the individual scents, and it didn't last overly long or strongly on me. So while I still think it's a beautiful scent, it's heading for the swap pile.
(These are from earlier this week)
Bengal - A sultry and unruly blend that emulates the ambient scent of the markets in ancient Bengal: skin musk with honey, peppers, clove, cinnamon bark and ginger. OMG, this is beautiful! Rich and lovely. When I first put it on it's a rich mix of spices and musk, and it just makes me want to purr. However, now that it's at the two minute mark it's starting to fade. *sob* If it stays at this level I'll be happy, but I'm desperately afraid it's going to disappear soon... Well, it did last 20 minutes! Longer than it seemed it would at first. Must try this one in the oil burner before giving up on it, because the clove and honey is just divine. :o)
Khajuraho - The fabled Khajuraho temples of India are shrines of love in all its myriad forms. They are a celebration of love itself - transcendental, spiritual and erotic. This is a blissful, euphoric blend based on an ancient Indian love potion: honey, date palm, tuberose, davana blossom, amber, white sandalwood, vanilla bean, Damask rose, and champaca flower. Oh, wow. This is lovely AND amazing. I still need to train my nose to discern more individual scents, but to my uneducated nose it appears that the honey, amber and vanilla balance out the florals incredibly well - this is just a gorgeous blend. Why oh WHY do I keep trying LE's?!? LOL. This one is going on my wishlist!
Dawn Spencer Hurwitz's Arabian Myrrh - Colorado perfumer. As much as I love the myrrh blends that I've tried, this one doesn't do anything for me. Barely can smell it in the bottle even, which is so sad since the person who sold it to me said it's the most lovely myrrh she's ran into. *sigh*
Dawn Spencer Hurwitz's Sensual Spice. I will take a wild guess and say this features clove! I've tried two other scents with clove recently and this is lovely like that. So far it's lasting longer than Bengal, which is definitely in its favor. It reminds me a bit of tea also, so it's obviously got other yummy spices in it.
