And it felt like it, especially on the blacktop of the fairgrounds. Still, it was a fantastic day!
First off, we actually were able to find a parking spot in the first lot! Not too bad a walk at all, and come to find out, fairly shady on the walk to and back. *g* Ended up making one stop back to the car to drop off the early purchases--found some lovely art prints (one of an elk in a mountain clearing, then two moonlit pictures by the same artist: one of two challenging bull elk, and one of a wolf. Absolutely beautiful! I had to have them.) We also ended up buying some of those herbal therapy things that you can heat up or freeze...got one slender cool one that you just put in cold water, and then it helps you stay cool for hours. That was absolutely necessary today! Quite the lifesaver. And then I just HAD to have this adorable dragon herbal buddy! He's even a black/purplyblue pattern on the front and purple on the back. I luv him! He's even supposed to help you relax with the herbal scent and sleep better. We'll see, but whatever, he's just cute.
Those were actually the only purchases for the day, other than food. Ended up not going on any rides at all today, despite the fantastic price. Which sorta sucks, but it was just too hot to even think about sitting in those metal rides. And they didn't have the orbiter! *pouts* Not even the scrambler. So, it really wasn't that big a loss. One of these years I'll make up for it by going to one of the big parks with the big roller coasters and the like, so it's not too huge a deal to miss out on a few rides here. *nods*
It took us absolutely forever to find Heather's calligraphy entry. Wandered around in the art section for over an hour, then the photography section, and then back to the art section because that's where it should have been.....somehow, the first time through, missed the middle section on the back side of one of the long sections. Ugh! Don't know how, but at least we did finally find it! Absolutely beautiful, of course, AND she won first place! YAY!!!! I called her to let her know but her boss must have been in a grumpy mood because she didn't get to talk very much at all. Oh well, it's still fantastic, and now she doesn't have to wait for the weekend to find out if she placed or not. ^__^
Let's see, also looked at the animal barns. Actually didn't see too many of the horses in their stalls, just the one little outside section. Saw a gorgeous little TB/Paint cross, Sarge, who was a sweetie. I think he wanted to eat my dragon though, all those yummy herbs...*g* He's for sale, and I may actually check out their website and see if they have an actual listing for him. I know he's out of my range, it's completely not in my budget or really my time frame, so it's ridiculous to check, but I may just check for the hell of it. Besides, if he costs too much then it really doesn't matter, I just want to know. lol. *shrugs* He was only 15H which for being half TB kind of surprised me, but he was built super nice.
We wandered through the sheep and goats. Saw some of the breeds that my Dad had when he had sheep, it was kind of cool to see them again. Saw a HUGE Hampshire Ram, he was one of the biggest sheep I've ever seen! lol. We also saw a neighbor of ours and some of her sheep, that was kind of cool. It was so HOT in there, they were all panting. People were doing their best to keep them cool with lots of water, spray and fans though. Spent more time with the chickens than I ever dreamed I'd like to do, but it was actually kind of fun to see all the different colors and all. And they had so many for sale for only $5 or 10! Was kind of cool. They had an incubator set up, and we saw two chicks hatch in like five minutes! There were probably 10 total already hatched, and lots more to go. It was really cool to see!
The bunny barn made me crave bunnies again! They had the sweetest little lilac rex's, and black satins, and californians, and lops, and dutch rabbits, and the steel grey and light grey flemish giants were fantastic! The flemish giants were only $20 and looked SO SWEET. When we had rabbits in high school, we actually had a few of the white flemish giants, and they were pretty mellow and kind natured. IF I was to get a rabbit for a pet, I'd probably go with one of the colored giants, even though I do have a soft spot for the black satins too. My first bunny, Chief, was a black satin, I think. He was a "found" rabbit, but he sure looked like the ones we saw today, if they were older and more filled out like he was. Seeing all the rabbits at the fair, I wish that we had taken some of our rabbits to the fair, we actually had some really nice ones I think. Would have had to have worked with handling them a whole lot more, but it would have been fun! And made a little money without going the 'fryer' route for all of them, which I would have preferred. :o) The cattle were also pretty cool to see, they had some longhorns (which are a whole lot bigger than Papa's steers! LOL), some black and red angus, shorthorns, limousins, and then jerseys, brown swiss and a holstein calf. The brown swiss are really pretty! Sweet looking like the jersey but more of a velvety chocolate brown. Pretty! Wish you could pet them, but they never look very approachable the way they're tied up.
By 5:00 or so we were getting really quite tired of walking around and it was sooooo hot, so we ended up going into the horse arena to chill out. Wasn't all that cool temp wise, but it was fun to see. We saw the miniature horse championship, and they were just adorable! Then we saw the Supreme Championship rounds for geldings, mares and stallions (The Champions and Reserve Champions from all 13 breed divisions earlier in the day). The judge apparently really liked the English style of horse, because the geldings and mares were both Arabians and Saddlebreds that placed. But the stallion Reserve was a gorgeous Quarter Horse, and then it was an Arabian for Champion. The Arabians certainly were gorgeous! I didn't get to see the Saddlebreds that much as they were at the far end, so I'm sure they were worthy of it, it was just interesting. Flashier, I'm sure. ^__^ Regardless, they were all gorgeous horses! Glad we were able to see them, especially since we didn't go through the barn proper.
While eating dinner, we did get to see...the SlingShot? It was in Spin or Rolling Stone this last issue, the guy who does the fantastically wild rides all over the world. Anyway, it did look pretty darn awesome! Saw a couple people go on it. Didn't *quite* seem worth the $25 to me, but if you do get to keep the video they take, maybe then it is worth it. I dunno! Whatever floats your boat, as they say.
We ate cheap for lunch so we could splurge on dinner, but actually ended up eating pretty cheap for dinner too. lol. That's okay though, then if we go again we can get something good to eat again. *G* Had yummy chicken for dinner and a strawberry lemonade, and then finished it off with a bubblegum/tiger blood hawaiian shaved ice. YUM. I'm not totally sure what tiger blood is, but it tasted rather like a cherry-pina colada mix. It tasted so fantastic on such a hot day!
So...I think that's most of today, really. Watched the skaters a bit during lunch, but it was more of a low thing/course, rather than the half-pipe. *shrug* It was hot. Hot. Melty hot. :o) Had a bit of a grumpy moment mid-afternoon, but after a bit of rest and a bit of food, the headache and grumpy mood went away. Thankfully!
Jenny sent me a funny card, I got it this morning. It shows this guru guy on the front, he says "The secret to an enjoyable birthday can be found in achieving balance"...you open it up and it says "forkful of cake, spoonful of ice cream, forkful of cake, spoonful of ice cream..." LOL! Her folks even signed it and her Mom said she missed me. Awwww! They are so fantastically sweet! Jenny even sent me this gorgeous dream catcher with a little metal horse head on top, and long denim colored suede strips ending in pretty cream feathers. Beautiful! And Nate *really* adored the feathers, he kept snuffling them. LOL! She's so sweet, and such a wonderful friend. *mwa*
So, now I'm home and it's down to 101. Whooooooo. O.o I'm so very glad we were able to get the a/c last week, it helps a LOT. Not too bad inside. And my dragon buddy and the advil are helping the headache along fantastically. Yay! Hopefully I'll be able to finish up my friends' lists tonight, otherwise will have to play catchup tomorrow.
My feet are quite tired of walking on hot blacktop, let me tell ya! I hope tomorrow isn't as long as I feel it might feel like! lol, that's the weird thing about going to the fair midweek instead of on the weekend! But hopefully it'll make the rest of the week seem short... :o)
